Follow the Giant Lobster to the Art

Islamorada has a thriving art scene, and if you want to learn more about it—and potentially pick up souvenirs and artwork to take back home with you—visiting the Rain Barrel Artisan Village is a great thing to add to your itinerary. It’s an easy journey from La Siesta, and you’ll be able to visit not only visual art galleries, but also a sculpture gallery, a studio of glass design, and a jewelry shop. With so many artists and shops in one location, there should be something to fit your particular tastes.

You’ll be able to stroll through the village’s tropical gardens while visiting the seven different galleries and shops on site, and having the opportunity to meet and work with some of the artists themselves. This village also offers an attraction right out front, and you’ll know you’ve made it to the right place when you see the giant lobster statue outside (and potentially, plenty of people taking pictures with it). This theme is carried further within the shops, and some of the art is framed in refurbished lobster traps, which help give the pieces their vibe of the Keys. There will also be plenty of otherwise ocean- and beach-themed pieces.

If you walk around until you get hungry, there is a close-by restaurant where you can pick up some well-regarded Mexican food at Puerto Vallarta. It’s a great place for large portions of chimichangas, shrimp tacos, and margaritas. They’ve even got a homemade hot sauce that is really spicy. For dessert, you can also get yourself some deep-fried ice cream.

If you end up eating until you’re sleepy, you can easily take the trip back to La Siesta before heading out for your nighttime plans. It’s also close enough that you won’t regret grabbing things to take back with you.
